The viola da gamba is a beautiful, serene instrument. Its special sound is mainly due to its elegant construction and the joints (like the frets on a guitar). It has its own family with a soprano (treble gamba), alto and bass gamba. Much beautiful consort (polyphonic) music has been written for this purpose.
The bass viol has 6 or 7 strings and the most beautiful solo music has been written for this over the centuries. It can also be heard as a solo instrument in some arias, such as in the St. Matthew Passion by J.S. Bach.
