The harpsichord is a predecessor of the piano. Unlike the piano, where a hammer hits the string when you press a key, with a harpsichord the string is plucked with a stylus; this creates the characteristic sound. The harpsichord was a popular instrument in Bach's time, but also regularly appears in contemporary pop music.
