In this 8-week course, you will build a strong musical foundation, diving deeper into both the technical and theoretical aspects of DJing. Coco Coquelicot will guide you through a widerange of genres and introduce you to various DJ techniques.
During the first two sessions, you will explore the history of DJing and learn essential music theory. You will then learn how to construct a DJ set with a strong narrative: how to select and mix tracks in a way that takes your audience on a musical journey. There is also a strong focus on developing your personal DJ style and identity, as well as understanding the DJ landscape to help you secure more gigs.
In the final two sessions, we will organize a dance night at Tumult, where all participants will perform their own DJ set.
Please note: You are expected to be familiar with the basics of Rekordbox and Pioneer mixers, or be able to play vinyl. Please bring a properly functioning laptop and USB stick or vinyl to the course. If you play vinyl, let us know in the comments section when registering.
About the teacher
Cora Ziengs is a Dutch DJ, organizer, and radio maker, performing under the names Coco Coquelicot and Ko Kliko. Since 2015, she has been active in the underground and club scene and is nationally recognized for her eclectic, groove-driven sets. She has performed at major festivals such as Lowlands, DGTL, and Noorderzon.
In addition to her work as a DJ, Cora is co-founder of Relate Radio, an independent radio platform that creates space for diverse voices and communities that often go unheard. She also organizes and programs club nights and dance events, with a special focus on queer communities and outsiders, such as Pauw! at VERA Groningen and Butts at OOST.
She regularly teaches DJ workshops throughout the Netherlands and specializes in musical storytelling, supported by her research master's degree from the University of Groningen. In this course, special attention is given to the political and historical context of DJ culture and electronic music, reflecting Cora's belief that music and politics are deeply interconnected.
